AFSCME supports bill to expand mental health resources for correctional officers
Correctional officers work in extremely high-stress environments. They proudly work to keep the public safe. But for many COs, the job comes at a high cost. Working as a corrections officer can severely impact their wellbeing. AFSCME members recognize the need to act, and that's why we consistently fight for more resources to support COs and their mental health.
The Corrections Officer Blake Schwarz Suicide Prevention Act will help more COs stay resilient on and off the job. This bi-partisan legislation will provide $300 million in grant funding for federal, state and local correctional facilities to implement confidential mental health screenings for corrections officers and provide local referrals for additional mental health services. It has been introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and in the House of Representative by Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA).
